We have had some beautiful weather this summer and some warm balmy evenings. I can't remember eating out in the garden as many times as we have this summer. After an early barbeque there is nothing better than evenings like this when you can sit out and enjoy the garden for hours into the night. I enjoy listening to the night sounds, the cool of the dark after the heat of the day and then at dusk, soft candlelight, night lights and fairy lights too.
I like watering the pots and baskets on an evening and hearing the sound of the cool of the water running and then feeling the patio flags, which are still baking from the sunshine on my bare feet.
It is fascinating just watching the sky change as it turns to dusk and seeing all the different colours and shapes and ripples from the clouds and the lowering sun. It is different every evening.
All the hard work in the garden feels worthwhile on nights like these when after a long day in the sunshine, you can just sit back and enjoy the still of the night and your garden for much longer. If you're lucky you can hear or see a hedgehog or two snuffling around. Sometimes we have a visit from a fox if we sit quietly enough. At dusk, after the birds have settled for the evening, we have bats swooping and dipping across the lawn. I don't mind the bats, especially on nights like these, I love to just sit and watch them at play.
They are evenings to savour and we don't get many, hopefully, although the weather has turned a little this last few days, there will be more to come yet before the end of summer!
